MKV to MP4 Converter
Make Matroska files easier to play without losing the strengths of the source. Remux compatible MKV streams when possible or re-encode complex codecs into standard MP4.
Drag & Drop Your Video

MKV is popular for archives because it can hold almost anything: multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, commentary, FLAC, AC3, DTS, HEVC, VP9, and more. That flexibility is also why MKV often fails on phones, smart TVs, consoles, and browser upload forms. MP4 is stricter, but that strictness is exactly what makes it widely playable.
This MKV to MP4 converter is built around that compatibility gap. If the Matroska file already contains MP4-friendly H.264 video and AAC audio, the tool can repackage the streams into MP4 with little or no quality change. If the file uses codecs MP4 devices commonly reject, the tool re-encodes to H.264 video and AAC audio for safer playback.
Use this page for anime files, Blu-ray backups, high-quality archives, downloaded MKV videos, and long-form recordings that need to play on mainstream devices. Subtitles and extra audio tracks may not survive every MP4 workflow, so keep the original MKV when it is your master archive. Convert a copy when portability matters more than container flexibility.
Why Use Our MKV to MP4 Converter
Smart Remux or Re-encode
If your MKV already has H.264/AAC streams, the tool remuxes them directly to MP4 without re-encoding. Instant, lossless, and preserving 100% quality. For incompatible codecs, it automatically re-encodes to H.264/AAC.
Universal Playback Compatibility
MKV won't play on iPhone, iPad, most smart TVs, PlayStation, Xbox, or in web browsers. MP4 plays everywhere. Every device, every platform, every app. Convert once, play anywhere.
Preserves Original Quality
In remux mode (H.264/AAC source), quality is perfectly preserved. The video and audio streams are copied bit-for-bit into the MP4 container with no quality change whatsoever.
Handles Large HD & 4K Files
MKV files are often large. Blu-ray rips, 4K content, and feature-length films. Since processing is local, there's no upload bottleneck. Convert files of any size or resolution.
Multiple Audio Track Support
MKV files often contain multiple audio tracks (different languages, commentary). Our tool processes the primary audio track while preserving multi-track metadata for compatibility.
100% Private & Local
WebAssembly runs FFmpeg entirely on your device. Your video content. Whether personal recordings, ripped media, or proprietary footage. Stays completely private throughout the conversion.
Features
- Understands Matroska-style files with extra audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and archive-oriented codec combinations
- Can repackage compatible H.264/AAC MKV streams into MP4 without the same quality tradeoff as a full transcode
- Re-encodes HEVC, VP9, FLAC, AC3, or other less portable combinations when mainstream MP4 playback is the goal
- Good for anime releases, Blu-ray backups, downloaded MKV files, concert videos, and high-quality archives that need a viewing copy
- Trimming helps create an MP4 clip from a long MKV without converting the entire archive file
- Keeps the original MKV valuable as a master while creating a simpler MP4 for phones, TVs, browsers, and clients
How It Works
- 1
Select your MKV file
Click or drag and drop any MKV file. The tool analyzes the internal codecs. Video (H.264, HEVC, VP9, etc.) and audio (AAC, MP3, FLAC, Opus, etc.). To determine the optimal conversion method.
- 2
Review conversion mode
The tool automatically selects the best method: remux (instant, lossless) for H.264/AAC sources, or re-encode for incompatible codecs. You can optionally trim the video to a specific segment.
- 3
Process in your browser
Click Convert. WebAssembly either remuxes the streams directly or re-encodes to H.264/AAC. All locally on your device. A progress bar shows real-time status.
- 4
Download your MP4
Your compatible MP4 downloads automatically. Play it on any device. IPhone, Android, tablet, smart TV, gaming console, or web browser. Upload to YouTube or share on social media.
Who Should Use This Tool
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between MKV and MP4?
Both are container formats (boxes that hold video, audio, and subtitle streams), but they differ in compatibility. MKV is open-source and supports virtually any codec combination, making it ideal for archival. MP4 has narrower codec support but universal device compatibility. It plays on everything.
Will converting MKV to MP4 lose quality?
It depends on the source codecs. If your MKV already contains H.264 video and AAC audio, the tool remuxes (copies) the streams directly to MP4. Zero quality loss, just a container change. If re-encoding is needed, the quality loss is minimal at the default settings.
How can I tell if my MKV will remux or re-encode?
Check the codecs: H.264 video + AAC audio = instant remux (lossless). HEVC/H.265 video, VP9 video, FLAC audio, Opus audio, or other non-MP4-native codecs = re-encode required. The tool handles this automatically.
Does this work with 4K MKV files?
Yes. 4K MKV files (including HDR content) are fully supported. In remux mode, 4K quality is perfectly preserved. In re-encode mode, you can maintain 4K resolution. Processing time scales with resolution and duration.
What happens to subtitles in my MKV file?
In remux mode, soft subtitles (text-based like SRT, ASS) can be preserved in the MP4 as timed text tracks if compatible. Image-based subtitles (VobSub, PGS) cannot be transferred to MP4. In re-encode mode, subtitles are not included in the output.
Can I convert only a portion of the MKV file?
Yes. Enable the Trim option and set start and end timecodes. For long MKV files like movies, you can extract a specific scene or segment without converting the entire file.
How fast is MKV to MP4 remuxing?
Very fast. Remuxing is limited by your storage read/write speed, not processing power. A 5 GB MKV with compatible codecs remuxes to MP4 in seconds. It's essentially a file copy operation with a container change.
Why don't my MKV files play on iPhone?
Apple's iOS and iPadOS do not support the MKV container format at all. Even if the internal codecs are H.264 and AAC (which Apple devices support), the MKV wrapper itself prevents playback. Converting to MP4 solves this by repackaging the same streams in an Apple-compatible container.
